Discovering Buenos

After five days in Buenos, we feel like we’ve gotten to know the city a bit. Over the last couple of days we’ve been discovering various neighbourhoods of the city – we’re staying on the edge of San Telmo, which we found our favourite part of Buenos, even though the area is a not as well maintained as some other districts. We’ve strolled the beautiful avenues and parks of the trendy barrio of Palermo, went to La Boca, with its pretty but overrun with tourists main street and walked around the city center.

There are many little things that we discovered here that are very interesting and different to life in Europe or Australia. Professional dog walkers walk groups of dogs through the streets, the Pope seems to be the main celebrity here – you can see him on posters, in the magazines, and on post stamps – just like Kate & William in Australia :) Another local celebrity we’ve discovered here is Mafalda, a little girl who is the main character in a series of local cartoons. We’ve been living on a diet that mostly consists of bread and beef, washed down with copious amounts of coffee and an occasional beer or wine and are wondering about long-term consequences of eating like this…

We’ve paid a visit to the presidential palace (Casa Rosario, the photo of it was in the previous post) and waved from the balcony that Evita used to speak to the crowds from. We’ve seen some really good tango dancing, had a perfect steak washed down with Malbec, sipped our coffees at corner cafes. So, even though it is really great here, it feels like a good time to leave Buenos Aires looking for even greener pastures :) The timing seems good too as after a few days of almost summer whether, today started with arctic-like cold, which is forecast to last a good few days.

So, in a few hours we’re leaving beautiful Buenos… and Argentina altogether. We’re taking a ferry across Rio de la Plata to the neighbouring Uruguay but should be back in Argentina in a few days time (not sure where exactly but hopefully somewhere north of Buenos). So the next post might be from Uruguay or from Argentina again… Stay tuned!
